Upgrade update
Overview
The largest and defining project of Hamilton City Council's LTCCP is the construction of the $68.4 million Claudelands Convention and Exhibition Centre. The redevelopment project has been designed on the basis of a unique one-site, multi-zoned facility with strong connectivity and close proximity to Hamilton's CBD. It includes a 5000-capacity multipurpose indoor arena, 1500-capacity conference centre and upgraded exhibition facilities.
Hamilton mayor Bob Simcock says the project is strongly supported by the community and will bring over $15m into the community every year, mostly from conferences.
The proposed redevelopment is a crucial piece of the city's event infrastructure, and will enable a variety of mid-sized live performance concerts, international sporting fixtures, major conferences and exhibitions along with an enhancement of the existing exhibition and show business.
A proposed pedestrian link ( as part of the City Heart project) to and from the CBD, a short walk of 10min across the Waikato River, will increase the connectivity between accommodation, central shopping and the venue.

This is evident in the securing of the Australian V8 Super Cars street race from 2008-14 and the New Zealand stage of the World Rally Championship, as well as Hamilton being host city for the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
